Bing Wang at Fudan University has recently published in Organic Letters a straightforward protocol to cyclize alkenyl iodides bearing an ester moiety via a lithium halogen exchange followed by nucleophilic attack.

Polycycle Synthesis via Tandem Reactions

Erwan Poupon – not to be confused with Grey Poupon – at CNRS in France has recently published in Organic Letters a nice way to make a polycyclic ring system via an intermolecular coupling of dialdehyde fragments with an amine.

Dynamic THERMODYNAMIC Resolution

We’ve seen many examples of dynamic kinetic resolutions – but have you ever heard of dynamic thermodynamic resolutions?  Jonathan Clayden at the University of Manchester has published a paper in JACS recently on the dynamic thermodynamic resolution for an asymmetric synthesis of QUINAP.  Basically different temperatures (0 degrees vs. 25 degrees) give different conformer ratios.

Distinguishing Stepwise vs. Concerted

Keiji Morokuma at Kyoto University has recently published in JACS a nice study on the mechanism of converting methyl malonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA using MMCM (methyl malonyl coa mutase enzyme that is vitamin B12 – cobalt – dependent).

Myxopyronin A an RNA polymerase inhibitor

Pregnenolone = Fountain of Youth?

Check out this Nature News and Views article by Bernd Nilius and Thomas Voets in Belgium about the relationship between pregnenolone and TRP channels.  It talks about how it can be called “the fountain of youth” with its anti-ageing and anti-arthritic properties.

Intramolecular [4+3] Cyclization

A group at the University of Hong Kong led by Pauline Chiu has published in JACS recently on a [4+3] cycloaddition reaction.  There were reports of intermolecular reactions but this group has modified it to the intramolecular version.
