Sinulaparvalides A and B

With IC50 values of 14 micrograms/mL and 10 micrograms/mL against HCT-116 tumor cell lines a diepoxycembrenolide and sinulaflexiolide K were isolated not for the first time by a team led by Yue-Wei Guo from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They did however isolate two new cembrane diterpenoids, sinulaparvalides A and B, however, they weren’t active compared to the known ones.

New Cembranoid Isolated from an Octocoral

Ana Diaz-Morrero and co-workers from the Institute de Productos Naturales y Agrobiologia del CSIC in Spain have recently published in Tetrahedron on the isolation of some new cembranoid compounds that contain furans from an octocoral, Leptogorgia sp.  They did not mention any biological activity in this report.

Cembrane-Africanane Terpenoids are Hybrid Metabolites

Marc Slattery and Haidy Kamel et al at the University of Mississippi reported recently in the Journal of Natural Products on the isolation of five new terpenoids from the hybrid of Sinularia maxima × S. polydactyl soft corals.  Hybridization of plants leads to very novel chemical compounds.  As mentioned in the paper, Linnaeus and Mendel in the 1700s and 1800s had suggested that hybridization could lead to new species, and also in this case, to new metabolites.  7E-polymaxenolide (1), 7E-5-epipolymaxenolide (2), and polymaxenolides A-C (3-5) were identified in this soft coral hybrid.

Cytotoxic Cembranoid Diterpenes

A group of cembranoid diterpenes were isolated from the soft coral S. trocheliophorum by Chang-Yih Duh in National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan and was reported in 1996 in the Journal of Natural Products.  These groups of compounds possessed cytotoxic activity especially towards P-388 cells (ie:  10 ng/mL).
