Onionin A

Posted by naturalproductman on July 5, 2010

Toshihiro Nohara and co-workers at Sojo University in Japan have published in the Journal of Natural Products on the isolation of onionin A and yes, it’s from a simple onion.  I have heard before that onions are good for you and this compound that is found in onions could be one of the reasons why they are good for our bodies.  The Nohara group in Japan isolated a tetrahydrothiophene oxide compound and found that it had suppressed the expression of CD163 at 10 and 30 micromolar concentrations.  This inhibition suggests that onionin A inhibits the polarization of M2 alternatively activated macrophages, which in turn inhibits tumor cell proliferation.
