Ring contraction to 5-membered rings

Stoltz and co-workers have reported in ACIEE on a method to make cyclopentenes with a chiral quaternary center starting from a seven membered ring precursor via a retro Aldol reaction promoted by a base.  You might be thinking:  well it’s hard to even make a seven membered ring in the first place – I guess they’re showing how good their palladium catalyzed asymmetric alkylation reaction is.

High Throughput Analysis of P450 reactions

Rudi Fasan and co-workers at Rochester University have reported in JACS on a way to identify substrates for P450 catalyzed reactions.  The method involves the use of methoxy substituted substrates for the P450 reactions, which undergo a Purpald-based colorimetric assay, to detect the formaldehyde product.  The assay stems from Arnold’s work.

Icetexane Diterpenes

Suresh Babu and co-workers from IICT have published in Tetrahedron Letters on the isolation of icetexane compounds from the plant Premna latifolia. One of the compounds had an IC50 value of 0.04 micrograms/mL against HT-29 cells.
