Gabriele Konig and co-workers at the University of Bonn in Germany have published in Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry on the isolation of phenalenone derivatives from marine-derived fungus Coniothyrium cereale that were found to inhibit human leukocyte elastase (HLE) at 7.2 to 10.9 micromolar IC50 values. The activity of HLE, a chymotrypsin, has implications in pulmonary emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, and cystic fibrosis.
