A group of ambiguine isonitriles were isolated in the lab of Jimmy Orjala at the University of Illinois in Chicago from the cyanobacterium Fischerella ambigua. Ambiguine A isonitrile had the most potent activity towards B. anthracis with a MIC of 1.0 micromolar. These molecules are structurally and biogenetically related to hapalindoles.
